  1. The first thing I saw when I opened up the page animallawonline.blogspot. com was “Et tu Minnesota?” referring to Brutus stabbing Caesar in the back, a major historic event, and immediately thought “explicit”. After scrolling down a little further I saw “treehugger”, “grisly killing” and “heartbreaking problem”. Although these words aren’t extrememly overstated, words like grisly and heartbreaking evoke emotion and treehugger is a very extreme name to call someone who supports the green movement.
After looking at more pages of the blog, I noticed the blog wasn’t all explicit. Many entries were simply informational, with simple teasers to get you interested in the story. So, in fact, the whole blog was not as explicit as I thought it was going to be from my first simple glance over.
I don’t think the color scheme adds to the blog at all. The colors, green, grey, orange, and brown, do not relate to anything that has to do with animals in my opinion. The sites down the right side of the page are probably helpful towards their goal of informing readers about the rights of animals, but other than that, I don’t think the blog does a lot. Sure, there are some articles that have to do with animals, but the blog is not eye catching and in my opinion doesn’t make the reader particularly want to stay on the site. The fact that there are articles non related to animals or even activism topics in general, such as the one about Justin Bieber, make it hard to take the blog seriously. Sure, these articles are fun to read and are maybe good for a laugh, but I think they take away from the seriousness of the blog and if the author really did want to inform the public about animal rights, the random articles are unnecessary and take away from the validity of the website.

  2. When I first got onto the page, I expected to see a lot of pictures of animals, and even a logo that had to do with animal rights. I feel like the color scheme, and the fact that the site is just boring in general, make it hard to be interested in the site at all. There are some really informational posts about animal laws and animal cruelty, but the other posts about Justin Bieber, or even Sarah Palin, are unnecessary. It's is kind of hard to take the blog seriously. I think the blog needs a lot of work.

  3. I agree with Abbey and Taylor. Viewing the blog at first glance, I did not have any interest to read further the posts or articles updated in the blog. The color scheme seems not in tune with the topic of the blog: animal law. I do not see rational connection between green color that dominates the blog page, with animal. Besides, there are no images that attract readers’ attention. However, I try to suspend my judgment which based on my first impression. I try to check the content to conclude an objective opinion. After reading some posts of the blog, my first impression does not change much. I figure out that the articles are not really informative or useful. For instance, there is a post with a title “Belated Congrats…” I click on it and realize that it does not have any interesting or educative articles about animal law. It only has one sentence of a congratulation of the Indiana Bar’s new animal law section. What is Indiana Bar’s new animal law section actually? It does not have the explanation or description on it. Readers may get confuse with the message and may lose their interests to follow the blog. Another example is an article with a title: “Thought LA was polluted?” The article is more about environmental issue rather than an animal issue. It mentions how this environmental problem affects some factory farms. Eventhough it relates to animal a little bit, but it does not specifically relate to animal law. In my opinion, this article is a little bit out of context. Overall, I do not think that the posts in this blog are useful and informative to readers. The contributors should work this out. Despite my comments on the post, I like the links provided on the right side of the page. They have the links to access other animal-related blogs that readers may be interest at. This may be beneficial to readers. They also have animal laws attorneys contact number so that readers who needs assistance with animal laws may quickly refer to this section.

  4. The initial appearance of this blog does not make the viewer want to explore the site any further. This thought was later proven when I viewed the site meter that showed the average visit as for less than one minute. When scrolling through the blog posts it can also be seen that there is rarely a comment on a post. It has a very bland layout and it can be assumed that an amateur created this in a very short amount of time. There seems to be no apparent reason for the color choice or the pattern used in the layout and may have been chosen simply because the creator liked it. The appearance of this site creates absolutely no ethos. On the side of the page it states, “This site features one practitioner's observations “. My question is a practitioner in what? The fact that it is not stated leads me to believe that she has little to no knowledge in this area and is based solely on her opinion.
This blog is very poorly made and does not create a reliable inviting atmosphere for viewers. There is nothing about this website that would draw readers back to it. The only thing that this site actually does is give a lot of links to other sources of information and lawyers. Overall the appearance of this site holds absolutely no meaning and other aspects of the site don’t seem to accomplish much either. This site needs a great amount of work visually in order to attract viewers and make the site seem like a reliable and accurate source of information.

  5. To be honest, this blog kind of confuses me and does not grab my interest. There isn’t much to the setup and the theme, which is OK, but if want your blog to be successful, you need to be appealing to your viewers. While pondering around the website, I took into account that at least half the blog entries weren’t about animals at all. Perhaps the owner of this site used “Animal Law Blog” as a way to lure an audience. However, the posts that do seem to be related are informative, and the list of different websites falling down the right side give us more information about animal topics as well.
One post stood out to me and made me really question the point of this blog. Back in November, the publisher posted a blog about t.v’s “Dancing With the Stars”. The whole entire post focused on the previous episode, commenting on the contestants’ dancing and finally telling us to vote. I’m just a little stuck as to why this post was necessary on an animal blog website.
I agree with the other comments that say that this blog needs quite a bit of work. If the point of the owner’s blog is for his/her audience to take animal laws and facts seriously, then he/she has some cleaning up to do and take the website seriously.

  6. What caught your eye? Personally mine is still wandering try to find something to grab my attention. There are no pictures on this page, with the exception of one article that posted a picture. I feel that pictures or art of some kind is what people are drawn towards first. In a way it acts as a summary of the blog without having to read anything. For example with the Feministing blog, the first art you see is of a woman so you assume that the cause of the blog is promoting women. Also in the Go Green blog we saw pictures of nature and windmills. All of these pictures and also the use of color help to grab the attention of the audience and also used as a form of pathos. The pathos of this blog to me is not working effectively to persuade the audience. You have to grab the emotion of your readers at their roots in order to keep them interested in what you are trying to say, and this blog does not do that well. I did scroll down on the page to see if there were any specifically interesting articles. I came to realization that none of the titles popped off the page either. They are also using a poor effort of pathos to get the emotion of the audience. This is just my opinion maybe the rest of you see it differently but this is what I thought.

  8. Upon opening the page, I was not enthused by the layout. The blog is very rectangular and did not take advantage of the full space. On the main page there was nothing that catches the viewer’s attention, since it is so bland it seems less credible. The creator of this blog did not put much effort into enticing the reader. Also, this blog is confusing to navigate. It would be more appealing if it had a navigation system, instead of just a bunch of random articles thrown together. It would attract more readers if the readers could find things that interest them. This blog does have a variety of post topics, but it may be a bit too random. I was hoping the articles would be more informational. The posts would graze the surface but would not give details. For example, the first post I read was no more than a vague congratulation. The post was commending Indiana Bar’s new Animal Law section. No more information was provided. Considering this was the first post on the page, it needs to charm the reader. This entry could have done so much more. There was not even a link to read more on the topic. It should have made the reader more knowledgeable on this new law section. Overall, this blog is not relatable and does not persuade the viewer to protect animal rights.

  9. The Animal Law Blog has very interesting posts and they cover all different types of topics. There are posts concerning the protection of animals, issues concerning animal cruelty, and even steps to strengthen animal welfare laws. Even though most of the posts involve all of these pressing issues, there are some posts that are simply related to animals. Some of these posts involve the production of food, food processing, or even bizarre posts that involve animals. For example, there was a post about a man who uses a snake as a service animal. The blog is very informational, but it seems very limited to individuals who are very interested in animals and the protection of them. There are no posts that may hint that this blog may be aimed towards a broad audience. The blog seems to focus on a small group of people, mainly animal rights activists.
The blog is not very eye-catchy or colorful. The website is laid out in a simple structure, but is not as easy to follow as it could be. It also does not seem to be very interesting. The site is bland and does not contain any but one picture. It does not seem to appeal to anyone but people who know what they are looking for. For instance, people who stumble upon the site would seem as if they would simply lose interest in the site if they were not looking for information about animal protection. The site is informational, yet unorganized. It has interesting posts, but does not appeal to a broad audience. The site seems successful when considering communicating information, but unsuccessful when considering the attention-grabbing factor.

  10. Things about animal law is actually a wide-range and serious topic which give people who do not care about animal laws a boring feeling when they read it. after i read some of the blog, surprisedly it did not inform me detail and specific things about what it talks about and adversely, they just want me to go another place to see it and that already made me have no mood to go on. in fact, what i expect is to look lots of images and videos about cute dogs or other adorable animals, however, it disappointed me a lot. i hope to know more about it through a more direct way that touching my heart and stimulating my thought. but on the other hand, people who present this blog really care about animals and they have the impulsion to know deeper of laws for regulate people from treating animals. that is indeed hard-won. maybe i am not that excited about how to protect animals in law; if someone would like to get into it and know more about it, it will be helpful to them. overall, there is no enough specific introduction of what is going on with animals and is not so persuasive to reach the emotional aspect from myself. maybe more vivid and closer to our daily life are essencial for improving it i think.

  11. Hey guys you've got a lot of great feedback on the blog! i like how everyone points out the lack of attention grabbing. it shows everyone is thinking the same thing. Please keep posting, i'm having fun reading your comments!

  12. Upon reaching the blog, I thought, "Here is a place that gets people started on animal rights." The overall layout of the page and color scheme made me believe that this blog was started up by a concerned citizen. The page lacks oomph that the previous blogs had. Starting with the header, it is very bland, but this could be because the creator does not have a lot of experience with blogs. The color scheme of green headings and brown font gives a nice look to the posts and page. Looking closer at the posts, one could see that the author is serious about animal rights and voicing their opinion. A problem I have with the posts is that the author does not want to reveal their identity so they go by “A”. Then, when I went to look at earlier posts, I saw that not all of the posts were related to animal rights. Some of the posts are about Justin Bieber, Ebay, gay rights, and Sarah Palin. This leads me to believe that this is not a very serious blog about animal rights, but an alright starting point for someone who would like to have more of an impact in society, especially since this blogs has links to other blogs, such as Animal Inventory Blog and Paw Talk.

  14. When I first opened the webpage for the Animal Law Blog, I was overwhelmed with the plain and dull color scheme. The background of grey with light orange, red, and green font color seemed to imply that the blog is boring. Because the color scheme had nothing to do with the blog’s topics the interface made the blog seem unprofessional. After more casual looking through articles, it seemed evident that the interface did not contain anything but postings from the author and a few additional links to other animal activism sites. The blog has easily accessible places for comments yet few comments were written. At the most, I found two comments to a blog post about a service snake. Reading the welcome banner for the website, the author describes that blog is meant to provide the opinion and observations of various animal law news. With this being said, I was surprised to come across topics that did not to relate to animal rights, or even animals at all. Posts citing gay rights, same-sex marriage, and Justin Bieber compromised the validity of the blog and ethos of the author.
The Animal Law Blog does discuss various laws about animal rights; however the blog only provides a minimum amount of information regarding them. The blog does not efficiently begin conversation about animal activism. With extraneous information throwing off the focus of the reader, the blog needs to be refined to animal specific posts. As well, the blog could use a make-over to catch the attention of more readers. The blog, with very few comments, seems to have a low number of readers. If the author changed the layout and had more specific topics being discussed, the Animal Law Blog could cause more readers to evaluate their own views on animal rights.

  15. When I first heard the name of the blog, I was excited to see what it had to offer. I really love animals and I had never really seen an animal activist website or blog. When I first looked at the blog, I was really not interested to see what it had to offer. It is very plain and has nothing related to animals at first glance. I expected there to be many pictures of animals and things that would really encourage the viewers to stand up for animal rights. One thing that I really disliked about this blog was that there really weren’t blog entries. There were short sentences that described other articles about animal rights. It did not remind me of a typical blog where you see opinions and interests come out in the writing. I didn’t want to click on the links to read the articles and I bet many other readers feel the same way. There were hardly any comments on any of the posts which made it seem like no one read the posts or no one really found them interesting enough to comment. The ethos of this blog was questionable. Do they really know what they are talking about if they are just using articles from other websites? They also had links to other animal activist blogs which I found very interesting. Wouldn’t they want people to read their blog? Not leave their blog to realize that other animal activist blogs are better and more informative.

  16. The first thing that came to my attention was the color scheme. A very boring and dull cream and brown and green is not the best to attract readers and give it an eye-popping factor. The colors do, though, look very earthy which is associated with animals, so I can see why the creator chose them. In my opinion, they should have used animal prints or have at least pictures of animals to make the blog more attractive.
The blog itself is good. It has a variety of different animal stories. This makes it possible for a variety of people to comment and this will produce more conversations on the blog. I think that the blog does a good job of actually trying to make a difference with animal laws. I like how they have a list of animal law attorneys and different animal law websites and different animal laws. This blog is probably the most efficient blog in actually giving resources and trying to make a difference with animals.
Overall, I think that they could have done a better job with the appearance, but it does give plenty of resources and has plenty of different articles to start conversations.

  17. When I first visited the blog, the green immediately caught my eye. I noticed all the headlines of the articles were in green which again, make it appealing to the eye. What also made the set up of this blog work was how it was organized by year then months on the side of the page. However, upon further exploring, the blog was kinda of dull and not exciting. The site lacked the ability to draw people in. The articles as a whole were also misleading. Some talked about animal rights while others dealt with issues that had nothing to do with animals. However, it was refreshing that this blog was not "in your face" but more informative. It would have been nice if they posted what they thought about the articles to start conversations versus just posting articles. Also, some of their posts were a paragraph short; either that or I could not figure out how to expand them which is bad because a good blog should be easy to navigate and use. Overall, the blog defiantly has room to improve and can do a better job at getting their point across.

  18. Yeah you are right. This is not a perfect blog and there is still big room to improve. Please keep your thought maybe we can discuss further tomorrow.

  19. I love the article in San Francisco. I think it is so awesome that people are suggesting passing a law to legalize the tracking of animal abusers. Just like any other crime, abuse in particular, the abusers are most likely going to attempt it again. Since we typically track abusers and offenders in human abuse crimes, for the same reasons, I don't see a problem doing the same for animal abusers. I believe this will be a great tool to lowering the rate of animal abuse in the city and in the nation if other cities follow suit.

  20. The blog's layout and design is dull and boring. The green and orange colors do not really stand out at all and there are no pictures to catch the reader's eye. While the blog does stay pretty on focus with mostly all articles relating to animal rights, it does not shove it in your face. In fact, most articles only offer a slight overview of the article and then offers you a link to another website to finish reading the material. I think that this will lose a lot of readers and may be a reason why people are not commenting. The send off of readers to other websites may hurt what the blog is trying to do because unless someone is really interested in what's being said, it is unlikely that they will continue to search for the article on other sites. The site lacks feedback, and the most comments that I saw on a post is two. However, I do still think that the blog does something. Every post is informative and if you read it, you'll most likely learn something new. Animal law is something that is not in the big news that much, so it is nice to have a website that is dedicated to spreading animal law news without forcing you to be an activist or anything.

  22. As much as I love animals and the content of the blog was good, I would never remember this blog. The color scheme was extremely boring and uninteresting. There was nothing to really associate with animals, it was very dull greens mixed together. Even if they had been able to use brighter colors and maybe some different colors as well to make the look of it more appealing. I love animals and wish I had dogs, unfortunately my parents are allergic, but I love them and would hate for things to happen to them. However I am not really an animal activist and not a vegetarian and I feel like this is who its directed toward. The other blogs I could semi relate to, but this one I just felt like it was completely unrelateable and unappealing to the reader.

  23. I love animals and support anything and anyone that wants to aware people of some of the dangers they face. Dangers such as abuse and ways people can protect animals from things like that. I like how this blog is not just for people that are all about serving animals. But it is also for people who want to know different ways about helping animals in difficult situations.
When I look at this blog I do not really care for the colors it does not make me want to explore the site as much. However the information on the side does make up for the lack of the colors.Being able to get in contact with a few animal law attorneys in different cities. This was a very creative site, because not many people think about laws being enforced for animals and their protection. Even though animals are not able to fend for themselves people need to be the activist and help get their needs across.
